01 · Price stack
A benchmark is a starting point, not the final import price
The first figures encountered in crude markets are usually benchmarks such as Brent or Dubai/Oman. Middle Eastern crude moving to Asia often refers to the Dubai/Oman family, while African and Mediterranean grades often refer to Brent. However, the actual pricing formula and OSP must be checked for each contract, producer and destination market. A single number on a news screen cannot establish the competitiveness of an individual cargo.
In practice, the benchmark averaging period, loading date, arrival date and payment currency interact. Even for the same grade, different pricing periods change the buyer's exposure, and including or excluding freight and insurance changes the comparison. Begin by putting the items included in each contract on the same unit basis.

02 · Crude quality
How API gravity and sulfur content affect refinery economics
API gravity indicates whether crude is relatively light or heavy, while sulfur content helps assess the processing burden of desulfurization and meeting product specifications. Lighter crude may generally be easier to convert into higher-value products such as naphtha and middle distillates, but this does not make it the best choice for every refinery.
The crude mix a refinery can process depends on its complex processing units, desulfurization equipment and cokers. A quality differential should be understood as the combined effect of expected yields, energy use, hydrogen consumption and by-product value at the relevant plant, rather than simply a ranking of quality.

03 · Time & inventory
The spot and forward curve indicates the incentive to hold inventory
When near-month prices exceed longer-dated prices, the scarcity of crude available for immediate use receives greater relative value. The reverse structure may increase the incentive to store and sell later. The curve does not predict future prices with certainty. Use it to assess how current inventory costs, procurement urgency and supply expectations are reflected in prices.
In an import-dependent market such as Korea, commercial inventories, refinery maintenance schedules and the distribution of vessel arrivals should be reviewed together. Even with the same total inventory, a shortage of a required grade or several cargoes arriving at once can change the operating burden.
Curve
Read the difference between near-month and longer-dated prices as a signal of physical supply and demand and holding costs.
Inventory quality
Check grade, location and when stock can actually be used, as well as total volume.
Refinery calendar
Maintenance and utilization plans can change purchasing requirements.
04 · Shipping chain
From Hormuz to the discharge berth, logistics depends on connected contracts
For Middle Eastern crude moving to Asia, route security, vessel size and availability, loading-port congestion and insurance terms work together. Risk at a particular strait is not only a question of sailing distance: it affects freight, war-risk insurance, schedule allowances and the availability of alternative supply.
At the contract stage, buyers should clarify Incoterms, the timing of title transfer, quality and quantity inspection methods, allowed laytime and responsibility for demurrage. Destination-port depth, tank capacity and pipeline connections also determine whether a cargo can actually be received. Commercial negotiations therefore cannot be considered separately from terminal operations.

05 · Risk controls
Review counterparties and sanctions before negotiating price
A crude transaction involves not only the seller but also the actual owner, vessel, shipping company, insurer, financial institutions and payment route. Unless beneficial ownership, sanctions exposure, vessel history and document consistency are reviewed, even a commercially attractive transaction may stop at payment or port entry.
Verification does not end with a single checklist. Information may change at contract signing, shipment, document presentation and payment. Define risk-based review points in advance, and include contractual rights to pause or seek further verification when warning signs appear.

06 · Buyer checklist
Bring the purchasing decision into one comparison table
The final comparison should place landed costs on the same pricing date and currency basis alongside expected product yields, additional processing costs, inventory holding costs and operating constraints. Adding qualitative assessments of counterparty credit, logistics certainty and contractual flexibility allows price and execution feasibility to be compared together.
A useful decision memo explains not only the conclusion but also the assumptions under which it would change. Sensitivities to freight, arrival delays, product crack spreads and refinery operating conditions allow the team to negotiate using a range of outcomes rather than one number.
Normalize
Align the price basis, currency, delivery terms and timing.
Model
Translate quality into yields and processing costs to calculate value for the refinery.
Stress
Identify the changes in freight, delays or yields that would reverse the conclusion.
Landed-cost comparison
Use the same reference date, currency and delivery basis for each candidate cargo, and record the source and sensitivity of each figure.

If an item's value or supporting evidence is unconfirmed, do not assume zero. Mark it as unconfirmed and manage it as a condition for the decision.
